The Shashamane settlement in Ethiopia, often referred to as “Little Jamaica,” stands as one of the most powerful symbols of the Rastafari movement’s historic “Back to Africa” repatriation vision.

More than a geographical location, Shashamane represents a cultural, spiritual, and political chapter in PanAfrican history, one shaped by hope, struggle, identity, and resilience. The origins of this settlement trace back to 1948, when Emperor Haile Selassie I granted 500 acres of land to the Ethiopian World Federation.
