Migration surges test Europe’s borders, policies, and moral obligations

Migration pressures at Europe’s borders continue to intensify, driven by poverty, conflict, political repression, and deep structural inequalities between the Global North and the Global South.

 

Reports show persistent rights violations, including summary returns, violence, and restricted access to asylum along the Mediterranean, Balkan, and Belarus routes. Even as the EU’s new Migration and Asylum Pact enters into force, many member states remain unprepared, leaving migrants vulnerable to legal uncertainty and humanitarian risks.
